🎶 NOW SPINNING: PÉREZ PRADO — “PREZ” 🎶
There is absolutely no sitting still with this one.
Tonight at Music Ed Cafe we’re spinning Pérez Prado’s “Prez” — a late-’50s RCA Victor LP loaded with explosive horns, Latin percussion, jazz arrangements and the unmistakable swagger of the man often called the King of Mambo.
What I love about this record is how adventurous it gets. Prado moves from Mexican and Latin standards like “María Bonita” and “Cucurrucucú Paloma” into jazz territory with “Lullaby of Birdland,” then completely flips the script by turning “Flight of the Bumble Bee” into a Pérez Prado orchestra workout.
It’s a reminder that mambo wasn’t some musical island. You can hear Latin rhythms colliding with big-band jazz, American pop and orchestral music — all delivered with massive brass hits and percussion that still sounds alive nearly 70 years later.
And this wasn’t an obscure entry in his catalog: Prez became Pérez Prado’s only U.S. Top 40 album, eventually reaching #22.
If you dig Tito Puente, Machito, big-band jazz, Afro-Cuban rhythms or just records that make the room feel instantly more alive, put Pérez Prado on your listening list.
